Eh, go joust yer mother! 10 reasons I hate the Argent Tournament

As some of you may recall, I was very excited before the patch about the goodies coming out of the Argent Tournament and couldn’t wait to get started. More than anything in the game right now I really, really, REALLY want the baby tree pet. Because of my enthusiasm, I thought that The Argent Tournament was going to be something that I just adored. I was wrong, so very, very wrong. Therefore, I now present to you the 10 reasons I loathe the Argent Tournament…
1. Vehicle combat can be fun. But when you get it, you get it. When you don’t you don’t.
2. Although I understand perfectly what I am “supposed” to do, I am simply not dextrous enough to do it. My left hand does not speak “WASD.”
3. No amount of practicing has improved my ability or my mood.
4. No amount of helpful advice from guildies and friends has improved my ability, although the sweet encouragement of others has momentarily lifted my mood.
5. Returning to jousting with temporarily lifted mood from the support of others has only set me up to fall from a greater height, as my mood again crashes down over and over because of my inability to freaking joust.
6. One daily that doesn’t require me to challenge jousters and joust them still requires me to go out and joust in Icecrown, where dozens of asshats wait for me to wipe out the guys on foot so that they can swoop in and joust the guys I just cleared a huge area to joust, leaving me not only incapable of jousting, but with no one to joust.
7. I fail at jousting at an intermediate level. I am a Valiant. It is inconceivable that I will improve my jousting enough to reach the next level to even get to the dailies that I would need to do to get the stupid currency I would need to buy my baby tree.
8. Those NPCs snicker about me openly amongst one another. I do believe that one called me a pansy yesterday.
9. I have had to bribe my husband, who loves me but hates WOW, to try and joust for me, thus sucking him into my dimension of utter fail.
10. My Draenei friend, Hummy, has already told me he’s going to get a baby tree before me. He taunts me. Plus he already has a little squire to follow him around and announce his greatness. What follows me is a little rain cloud of fail.
Suck it, Argent Tournament. /sob!

and number 11. NPC’s RUN OUT OF BOUNDS!! and YOU get punished for it.
Awwww…
Don’t be too down! I, too, am only mediocre at the jousting aspect of the argent tournament. Loathing the jousting quests is an easy thing to do! One thing I found really helpful for the quest out in Icecrown is to pair up with a friend or two. It makes it a million times easier to kill the leigonaires and commanders! As a matter of fact…couldn’t you bribe, say, someone like Hummy with…oh, maybe, black jellyfish?!?!
Don’t get too down! Think of it like a diet, and tape a picture of the little tree on your fridge. It may suck to do it…but that tree can be yours! (Mmmm….Ben and Jerry’s is kept in the freezer, since we aren’t REALLY on a diet, we can have a scoop…or a pint! It will surely numb the pain of jousting, right?!?!).

you totally cheered me up!
Syll, try this: keep your shield at 3 at all times. Just stay in melée range and spam 1 until they run away from you. Then hit 2 until you launch a single shield breaker and then close the distance before they can charge at you. It’s mind numbingly boring and it takes a while to bring them down, but it works every time.

Don’t actually move around at all when jousting the NPCs. You want 3 shields up before you start, otherwise they’ll kill you. Then, just stand there, melee them (with a shield up) when they’re in melee range, and then hit your ranged abilities. If you charge them, then just turn around back to face them and stand in one spot. My biggest mistake was always trying to run away from them or to maneuver around at all. I also picked to fight the big elephants where I can see them easier when I was first learning, ’cause bigger targets = easier to find them in the mess of other people jousting.
Deep breaths, you don’t need to joust to get argent credits, so you’ll get there, just a bit slower than the jockey pros.
Still, without jousting at all you get 3 marks a day at both the champion and aspirant levels. Counting the double-up day and the free 10 seals when you graduate to champion, it only takes 18 days to go from aspirant to Teldrassil Sapling, compared to 10 if you do the 4 joust quests every day.
PS. For the aspirant icecrown jousting thing, you don’t actually need to joust at all. Just target the dudes with 1 red shield, inch into range and hit “3″ to charge. Then, spam 1 until he dies, and then run away. The foot soldiers will crumble when you run over them, no need to attack. If you get knocked off your horse, spam shadowmeld!
So far it has seemed I get credit for any kill I assist on in Icecrown, whether I targetted them or not. Maybe try it? Also, the three-shield, slow, melee thing others are suggesting is slow, but it works. I haven’t lost a match since I started doing it. Only thing to watch out for is not letting your shield drop off.
Er, by “targetted” in my last comment, I meant “tagged,” i.e. I didn’t hit them first, but as long as I helped kill them, I got kill points.
I’m not sure what I love more, the fact that I get mentioned in number 10 or the Tags for this post. lol.
I’ll toss out my own advice, though I don’t know if you’ll end up using it. From what I’ve read above there are several ways to do this.
I had a HELL of a time doing this until I looked up a strategy. They still get me 1 out of 3 times.
Start off with shields up (Mr. Sulu). I stand on top of the guy I want to attack, face the same direction (because as soon as you start the battle he’s going to run away and then come back at you.). As soon as he goes hostile you’ll be able to spam the spear thrust melee thing (number 1), I just use my pinky for this. Keep on whacking at him until he runs away. When he does this start spamming the Charge (I use the mouse for this), as soon as he’s in range you’ll hit him before he can hit you. You’ll get a temporary burst of speed and run right through him, at this point do a tight circle and come back ’round to meet him. Throw your shield breaker as soon as you’re facing him. As you pass him he’ll probably get a spear off at you too, so be ready to bump up your shield again as soon as you charge. Then it’s back to melee. Rinse, repeat.
If at any point your shield goes down really low just keep close to him until you can get your shields up, that way he can’t spear you or charge you.
Also, try to keep it in the Tournament grounds. Your tourney mount only works within that area and if you leave it you’re dismounted which equals an automatic forfeit (definitely deserves No. 11).
The only ASDW keys I use really are A and D to turn in the direction of my opponent as he runs away to charge. Use my mouse to charge up my shield, throw spears and charge. Pinky for melee. /shrug.
Long winded I know, sorry. Oh and I already decided way back when that I wasn’t going to get the mini-you pet before you did. I just like to razz you about it.
lol thanks for all the encouragement, guys. It looks like I’m going to get by with a little help from my friends

It’s gonna be a pain this thing. I’ll be getting my Champion status today and am not so excited about the amount of dailies I’ll have to do to get enough seals for everything I want :\ I might have to give up on the epic flyer :<
I am dead set on getting the lashling, tiger mount and.. I think there’s something else.
[...] gotta say first off, I totally agree with Sylly’s thoughts on jousting! I hate it. I hate it with the burning passion of a thousand suns in an oven, set on fire, in a [...]
It’s terribly broken but if you really want those seals, have a dps friend simply burn the mob down with their normal abilities (i.e. not on their own mount) whilst you stand there and keep your shields up.
For the citadel daily any kills in a group are shared to just ask for someone who wants to do them together ‘to speed things up’
Good luck on getting your baby tree – I’m slowly working my way towards one too!

Omg, I loled so hard. *huggles!* I’m getting fairly sick of the dailies as well, ESPECIALLY the ice crown one. I really want the tree pet though… =/

learning your WASD keys will help you 10 fold.. not just at jousting but in every aspect of WoW, and many MANY other available games, and future games.

I hear ya, helpful, and I’ve tried. It’s a question of dexterity. My left hand is sort of a block of wood. Luckily, I worked through my frustration and with lots of practice have become a champion jouster! I don’t get them down fast, but I get them down.
