Down Memory Lane…

Keredria at Tree of Life picked up on a meme started by Averna at Nerf This Druid inspired by the question posed by Miss Elf, “What do you remember about being a newbie?” In a sort of six degrees of Kevin Bacon way, Keredria then reached out her leafy fingers and tapped me to join the conversation. So join me now for a little trip into the way back yonder for a look at the silliness of Sylly’s early days…
- I saved up all of my money to buy the full set of HAWT grey leather gear sold in Darnassus.
- Syll started life as a male toon and, for a while, I got quite a kick out of people thinking I was a guy. I actually played it up to some degree and was amused endlessly at how good I was at being “one of the boys.” The jig was up, of course, when Blizz introduced voice chat into the game. The topic of guild conversation for weeks was that OMG SYLL’S A CHICK???
- I had zero clue about gear itemization and generally just went for whatever had the most armor because I thought that it would surely protect me better from death than any other stat.
- I remember dinging and getting tree form in Sunken Temple and saying something like, “omg you guys I got tree form! It is supposed to just make my healing so uber leet! woot!” And then we all wiped on the next pull.
- I certainly remember learning that kitty stealth form didn’t work around higher level mobs. Nothing stealthy about a dead cat. Dead cat is dead.
- I remember some kind soul taking me on a run to Iron Forge from Menethil Harbor when I was about level 15 or so to get me the FPs. Damn Wetlands crocs still probably have burps that smell faintly of my butt.
- My favorite early memory of all is how I met one of my dearest WOW friends of all, Bricco. I was going for my water form quest (old school rulez!) and we were doing the part out byDarkshore. I had looked up the quest on Thottbot because I couldn’t find what I was looking for. I had no coordinates mod, so I was just trying to follow some directions someone had given. I kept dying, and dying, and dying. Finally I asked in guild chat if someone could come help me. Bricco volunteered (he was a very impressive level 23 or something like that!) He came all the way out where I was and stayed there with me while I died, and died, and died some more. This was my first introduction to fatigue when swimming off the map but I had no clue what was going on. I had missed my mark by about a bazillion miles and was just bloodying my head against the same brick wall over and over again. Bricco was just as sweet to me as the day is long, though. I distinctly remember starting my dozenth or so corpse run and him saying, “Imma go smoke.” LOL! Priceless. Priceless, soggy memory.
Thanks for the tag, Ker! I’m all nostalgic now and have a goofy smile on my face!
I’d love to hear from some readers some of your favorite, silliest, newbiest memories, too! I’ll also spread the love to a couple other bloggers out there… Bellweather @ 4 Haelz, Leafy @ Leafshine, Llanion @ Mad Cow Chronicles, this meme’s for you! =)

I remember not knowing how to speak in general chat for like 3 months into playing wow. I would just yell when I needed something.
I remember buying bags from a vendor instead of going to the Auction house. Whats the ah again?
I remember killing mob after mob after mob to get exp to level, because I wasnt used to playing RPG’s that gave experience for just questing.
I remember not putting a single point in any tallent until I was level 22 because I thought it was permanent.
lol good stuff, Mythology! Your comment totally reminded me of being so clueless about the chat channels!
“I had zero clue about gear itemization and generally just went for whatever had the most armor because I thought that it would surely protect me better from death than any other stat.”
haha I did this too. I felt like such a tard when my guildies told me that I was wearing druid gear as a rogue when I was around level 30.
mike’s last blog post..The late bloomer blues
hahaha! thankfully for my ego, I was the one to realize my mistake and not my friends in the case of the stats on my gear.
My friend from Halo got me to play. What is the easiest class to level? A hunter? Yah, I pick a holy NE priest called Boogermensch. My wife joined me 10 days later as a human protection warrior.
We picked the wrong professions as our first toons so we never had money.
We constantly bought gear from NPCs until our friend told us about the AH at level 17. Then we were broke from buying new gear each level from the AH.
I thought renew was the only healing spell I really ever needed till my low 20s. I just always shielded my wife and renewed her. Remember the days when a warrior tank would lose their sh*t if you bubbled them?
The first time I was asked to heal BFD, I made the bear tank angry because he kept dropping form to help heal himself because I didn’t know what I was doing. I also caused at least 3 noob wipes.
Enchants, elixirs, bandages? What are those and why would I ever want those?
We never used addons until level 40 or so. They seemed so intimidating and I didn’t know how to install them. Now, I cannot live with addons let alone heal effectively without them. We still have our original ally toons even though we switch to horde. I plan on working on my priest on vacation next week
I remember when I hit level 10 or 11 and went to Westfall for the first time on my warrior. I thought I could take on anything, I saw my first Horde toon ever, I told my brother I was going to fight him and before he could say the word “Don’t do…” I was one shotted, and I thought he was cheating somehow. My brother laughed and told me what the skull on there headshot meant.
Also, my brother didn’t tell me there was a auction house and I discovered it in my 30′s (sad really).
lol Chris! your brother wasn’t a very good keeper!!!
Once Upon A Leafy…
Once upon a time, a very long time ago in fact, I was tagged to do a meme. And I thought “ooh, that looks fun. I must dig out a really old screenie and do that”. And promptly forgot all……
ahahaha, This post has made me nostalgic :3
I remember being at level twelve, going to ‘raid’ with some guildies, being snapped up by crocolisks on the run to barrens o_o
A few other things:
-discovering talent points, and gear at around 30
-discovering my EXP bar at about level 20+ ><
-killing grellkin in Teldrassil in order to save up my coppers to buy Moonfire :p
=)
