The Crash Test Dummy is Me
Ever see Monty Python’s Life of Brian? Remember when all the people are coming to Brian (a Jesus figure) with their afflictions and one says “I am afflicted by a bald patch, Oh Lord!” Well, dear readers, I am afflicted by a bald patch this morning. Self inflicted. I’ve been pulling out my hair. I’ve gotten some nice upgrades from Ulduar 25 in the past couple of weeks (woot!) including a new T8 helm and some nice new gloves. I sat down and tried to figure out if it was worth it to give up my T7.5 4pc bonus to equip them both or not. I mean, I tried really hard. I had all kinds of calculations going about Nourish and co-efficients and number of HoTs and percentage of Nourish use in last night’s raid. Of course, I came to nothing because a) I’m not tremendously good at math, b) there were too many variables for me to have any hope of tracking, and c) it’s time to take my daughter to swimming lessons.
And then I thought about writing a post about how healers need crash test dummies like the practice targets DPS get to bang away at. I really thought about this. If you see what’s coming, don’t give up on me. Just love me for the flawed but special little snowflake that I am.
Because, of course, I could have just done some testing on myself with both gear options. Just cast Nourish and other heals on myself 8 billion times and find averages in each gear set and make a choice.
I could still do that. I might. Or I might just go with the new gear because a) the other option still involves math, b) I’ve exhausted and exasperated myself past all healthy levels, and c) the T8 helm is the first helm since T4 that I’ve had that I’ve actually wanted to show instead of hide on my toon.
But I still can’t get over how much work I put into an insolvable equation only to arrive at a conclusion that made me feel like SUCH an idiot. /facepalm
Maybe I needed some coffee before trying to figure this out. That was then. This is now. Now I need a drink.

I think there’s something *very important* you’re failing to take into account here. The helmet on the left makes you look you have a Christmas tree on your head. Whereas the one on the right is a glowing crescent moon affixed to your forehead by, it appears, magnetisim?
‘Nough said.

how could I have left that out of my calculations? The real trick will be deciding which of these is a pro and which is a con….
You can turn off helm graphics, so that doesn’t even matter, lol.
That said… I test HOTs by taking damage on purpose. The best place I found to do it is jumping off the cliff by the druid trainer in moonglade. You can jump off, HOT yourself to see how much they tick, and then run back up and jump off again. The drop is too short to kill you, but you only get a couple ticks of your HOT off before you are at full HP again…
The moon head does rock =)
And don’t worry! We all have our moments…I’m just usually too embarassed to share mine

Just take the glyph of nourish if you don’t already, and go for T8 level gear. I was apprehensive at first, but one thing is that they have more stamina, which is good for Ulduar and all the damage flying around. I would only reconsider if you were an MT healer and you needed to prop up nourish as much as possible.

David, I totally agree that I’ll upgrade to T8. I was just wondering if I should do it a piece at a time or wait until I had set bonuses to replace the ones I’d be losing from T7 =)
Also turning off helmets is for whimps =P

I wanna know what makes tier 8 better than tier 7.5, apart from a number. The set has no mp5 AT ALL. It lacks so much! The only good thing about it is making you oom (haste galore) and giving you tons of SP.
Tier 8.5 on the other hand, I’d be more than willing to upgrade to (has more spirit + SP + the haste by quite an amount). One piece of tier 8 is ok I guess, but I really cannot see the goodness of tier 8 compared to tier 7.5…
